I WISH I KNEWLABOR

“I was in labor… and I didn’t even know it.”

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I truly thought I knew what labor would look like.

You know… the movie version: your water dramatically breaks, you feel contractions, you panic, and you rush to the hospital.

But what happened to me?
Completely different — and honestly, I still can’t believe no one told me this could happen.

I had a midwife for my prenatal care because I wanted a more holistic and personal approach to pregnancy — especially since I was older, I was 35 at the time, and becoming a first-time mom. Midwives often spend more time with you, focus on your overall wellness, and make the experience feel less clinical and more supportive.

I felt really good about my decision… until the day I went into labor and didn’t even know it.

The leaking that didn’t feel like labor

One day I started noticing I was leaking a clear liquid. Not gushing. Not running down my leg. Just… leaking. I put on a panty liner and went about my day thinking it was probably nothing. But it kept happening all day, so I called my midwife.

She asked if it was gushing or if I was in pain.

It wasn’t.

And I wasn’t.

So she told me to call back if it turned into a gush or if I started feeling pain. Since I had an appointment the next morning anyway, I didn’t worry too much. I even took a nap on the couch.

What I didn’t know (and no one warned me)

Here’s the part that still shocks me:
I never felt any pain. No contractions. Nothing.

I also never saw that “mucus plug” everyone talks about — you know, the supposed first sign that labor is coming. So in my mind, there was no way I was about to have a baby.

The next morning: “You’re in labor.”

The next day I drove myself to my appointment like normal. My midwife checked me and said:

“You’re in labor. That leaking was your water breaking. You need to go to the hospital right away.”

Instant panic!

I was 38½ weeks and somehow still didn’t have anything ready. I wasn’t prepared emotionally, mentally, or physically — and suddenly I was being told to go NOW.

When I got to the hospital I was admitted right away, but I was only 1 centimeter dilated.

Because I had already lost so much fluid, they wanted to induce me to get labor going and help me dilate.

After what felt like forever with little progress, my baby started to show signs of distress — and I was told I needed a c-section.

The guilt I carried

When I heard I was going to need an emergency c-section I was hysterical. I felt so guilty for not going in sooner, like I could have prevented this outcome.

But the truth is… no one tells you:

  • your water doesn’t always gush

  • labor doesn’t always hurt in the beginning

  • you can literally be in labor and have no idea

I truly expected a “big sign,” not slow leaking and zero pain.
